About ten years ago I read a series of books that totally changed my life. It is sad to say that the author allowed his ego to take over, and he is serving time in jail for embellishing his claims. Ego and greed can be a powerful thing. I won’t mention his name in this post, because he has done a lot of good. The most powerful things he did for me were that I started reading the labels on all of my foods, which lead me to eating mostly organic foods, filtering my water, not only the water I drink, but also the water I take a shower with.
Last week I had the privilege to go to two events. The first was a book signing, and an interview with Vani Hari, author of The Food Babe Way.
She, too, is an advocate of clean eating and all things healthy, and I don’t think she is going to let her ego take over. Vani grew up eating fast, and processed foods. She was overweight, and on a slew of medications. She finally took her life into her own hands, and started reading the labels on the foods she ate, investigated those ingredients, and realized that our foods are laden with poison. Poison that the FDA allows to be used in our everyday food. She is now healthy, slim, medication free, and an advocate for all things healthy.
My mother passed away five years ago from Triple Negative Breast Cancer that metastasized to her brain. She was 88. Except for one great aunt of mine who smoked like a chimney, and died of lung cancer, there has not been any cancer on my mother’s side of the family. Her mother, who raised her own chickens and grew her own vegetables, passed away when she was 96. My mother loved all things processed, had most of her clothes dry cleaned (chemicals abound here), and wondered why she had cancer.

In chapter two, she outlines The Sickening 15 Chemicals We Eat. These are things that are found in our daily diets. No wonder the health of the United States is at risk. Here is the list, but I suggest you buy this book, and read what these chemicals are and how they are affecting our health.
- Growth hormones in meat
- Refined and enriched flour (bleach and peroxide)
- BPA (bisphenol)
- High fructose corn syrup (a chemical derivative of corn syrup)
- Artificial sweeteners (aspartame, neotame, saccharin, sucralose, erythritol, aesulfame, and more)
- Preservatives (nitrates)
- Trans fats (man-made/hydrogenation)
- Artificial and natural flavors (why would anyone want to put anything artificial in their body, and trust me natural came out of some chemical lab)
- Food dyes (made from petroleum)
- Dough conditioners (chemicals added to bread so it doesn’t go bad)
- Carrageenan (inflammatory agent linked to irritable bowel syndrome)
- MSG (Monosodium glutamate)
- Heavy metals and neurotoxins
Not only does Vani tell you about these things that are in our everyday processed foods, but also she will give you a 21 day plan on how to detox your body of them. Are you on a bunch of medication because your doctor gave them to you? Does your doctor talk to you about your diet, or does (s)he just treat your symptoms with prescription drugs? Think about this. Read this book. Take charge of your life. Your health is in your hands, not that of a doctor.
